Wood County Retired Teachers Meeting

A group of Wood County Retired Teachers met May 14, 1960 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church, Quitman, Texas for the purpose of organizing a Wood County Retired Teachers Organization.

Mrs. Cleo Browning of Winnsboro introduced Mrs. Helen Hale, Assistant State Director for Texas.  Mrs. Hale gave an informative talk about the Hows, Whys, and Wherefores of Retired Teachers Organizations.

Following Mrs. Hale’s speech, she appointed Mrs. Cleo Browning of Winnsboro as temporary Chairman for the purpose of electing officers.
Mrs. Lillian Cathey nominated Cleo Browning. Mrs. Sara McIntosh moved the nomination cease and Mrs. Browning be elected by acclamation,
The group voted in favor of the motion.  Mrs. Browning became our president for the year l980-1981.

Other officers nominated from the floor and elected were:
Vice President: Mrs. Lou French
Secretary:  Mrs. Floy Goolsby
Treasurer: Mrs. Jewel Stroman
Reporter:  Mrs. Lillian Cathey

Mrs. Hale then installed the slate of Officers.

A time was set for the executive committee to meet: May 22, at 2:00 P.M. with the president, Mrs. Browning.
The group discussed local dues, Someone made the motion that the local dues be two dollars each for the 1st year.
The motion was seconded and the notion carried.

It was moved and seconded that the name of the Organization be Wood County Retired Teachers Association. The group voted in favor of the motion. The next meeting of the Wood County Retired Teachers Association was set for July 7, 7:00 p.m. in the home of Edwin and Floy Goolsby.  The purpose of this meeting would be a Membership Drive.   All Retired Teachers and other interested persons who pay local dues at the July 7, 1980 meeting would be charter members.  This was also to be a covered dish supper.

It was hoped that at this time we would have a permanent meeting place.

Executive Committee Meeting

The Executive Committee of Wood County Teachers Association met in the home of Mrs. Cleo Browning, Winnsboro, Texas, May 22, 1980.

The meeting was called to order by our president, Cleo Browning.  Lillian made a motion that we check with Mrs. Milner to see if we could use the Arnold Holly Hall as a permanent meeting place.  Jewel Stroman seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  A Constitution and By-Laws Committee was appointed:

Floy Goolsby, Chairman, Lillian Cathey, and Jewel Stroman.

Chairman for the following committees were appointed:

Membership Committee:  Lou French, Quitman

Pre-Retirement Planning Committee:  Gussie Parker, Winnsboro

Informative and Protective Services:  Sara McIntosh, Quitman

Community Participation Committee:  Minnie Alice Lott, Mineola

Legislative Committee:  Nadine Holley, Quitman
