Book Project

In 1998 the Texas Retired Teacher Association began a state-wide Book Project.  Our local Mesquite Association began to participate in the project during that year. One hundred fifty books were purchased for first grade students at Seaborn Elementary.

Since that time we have increased the number of books given to MISD students every year. This year we have purchased 1,922 books given to grade one students in 18 schools. Our goal is to give every first grade Mesquite student a new book every year.

The money to purchase the books comes from member donations, fund raisers, and donations from other organizations.  Books are purchased from Scholastic through their Literacy Partnership. We report the number of books we purchase to TRTA and their records show that through this project at the state level more than 500,000 books have been distributed to Texas children who otherwise might never have a book to call their own.
