The Purposes of WSRSEA are as follows:

The purposes of the Association shall be to promote preservation and maintenance of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas Pension Trust Fund for purposes as established in Article XVI, Section 67 of the Constitution of the State of Texas; to encourage that the Pension Trust Fund is preserved to pay, upon retirement, annuities and future annuity increases to the retired members of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas; and to work with the Texas Legislature and the United States Congress to protect, promote, and defend the interests of Teacher Retirement System of Texas members.

The Objectives of WSRSEA are as follows:

The objectives of this Association shall be to cooperate with associations of retired school employees of equal status, associations of active school employees, and other associations of retired persons in solving problems of mutual training and experience in the furtherance of educational and civic endeavors in the community, state and nation; to promote the professional, economic, intellectual, social and healthy well-being of retired school employees; and to encourage active school employees to prepare in advance for retirement by making them aware of the importance of the Association and TRTA.

We generally meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month with two exceptions.  In November we meet on the third Wednesday, due to Thanksgiving.  In December we have our Christmas party, which is usually on the first Wednesday.

Please check Event Calendar for more information.

Giving Back

As members of WSRSEA, we enjoy giving back to our community and to the children in our WSISD.

Projects for 2019-2020

TRTF:  The Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF) is the charitable partner organization of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA). TRTF is a non-profit 501(c)3 dedicated to helping active and retired educators by providing financial assistance through grants and scholarships.

TRTF offers several charitable programs and has provided more than $480,000 to educators of the past, present and future since 2008, including $160,000 for victims of Hurricane Harvey. For more information go to the TRTA webpage.

Community Volunteering:   Members keep track of hours spent in volunteering in the community.  Those hours are sent to TRTA.  Each hour prevents an organization or a person from spending money to have these jobs done.

Scholarship Project:  The Karen Welch Scholarship, of $1000.00, is given to a Brewer High School Senior each year in memory of or to honor one of our faithful members. For the past two years, that scholarship has been been given in honor of members who have recently passed away.  In 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, the scholarship amount increased to $1500.00, due to donations from family and friends of the deceased.  In 2018-2019, the Karen Welch Scholarship was given in honor of Marellen Patterson, longtime member and president of WSRSEA.

Book Project:  Each year WSRSEA gathers new and "gently loved" books for children  who attend school in WSISD.  In past years these books have been given to the HEAD START program in our school district.  For 2017-18, we delivered 160 Children's Books to Head Start students and 22 children's books for teachers to use in their classrooms.

The WSRSEA members donate both books and dollars to this project.  For each meeting, an envelope is passed among members to donate funds to purchase books to be given.  Some members also attend library book sales and other book sales to purchase books for the project.  Our members truly enjoy seeing the happy faces of these very young children as they receive their books.  Members feel that getting books into their hands at this early age is an encouragement to young readers.

For 2018-19, WSRSEA gave 250 books to WSISD children in PPCD and Pre-kindergarten.

BHS Choir Program:  WSRSEA donates $50.00 each year to help the Brewer High School Choir as they participate in competitions.

BHS Culinary Arts Program:  WSRSEA donates $50.00 each year to help the Brewer High School Culinary Arts as they participate in competitions.

Both of these groups contribute to our programs and make them more enjoyable.
