Greetings to all our members.    Regarding the Bylaws (newly revised), they will be posted on our
ORT/SPA web page in the very near future  under the tab  “Bylaws.”    You will want to take a look
at them.

Regarding the Book Project,  this year we are taking up money which will be given to the
elementary school  librarians  to buy the books of their choice.  We now have $158, as of the January meeting,  for the purchase of books.  In order to meet a goal of $1,500 we are calling on our members to donate what they can.  We suggest  donations  of $5.  If we meet this goal we would be able to donate to more than one school.   Cash and checks are accepted.  If you write a check please make a notation that the money is for the Book Project.  Send your donation to Treasurer Marcus Ramage at P. O.  Box 1645, Odessa, 79760.

State Convention Delegates appointed in January are the following:  Marcus Ramage , Sandra Ramage, Sara Easley, Libby McCrone and Karen Telck.   Kathy Chandler is an alternate.

President Reeves called the meeting to order  at  1:30 p.m., welcoming visitors and making announcements.  Karen Telck, 2nd Vice Pres.  Introduced Heather Massey, Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau, who brought a program on scam phone calls and scams on social media. The Thought for the Day was brought by Libby McCrone on the subject of Friendship.  Sherry Pomroy led the pledges.

The minutes were approved as corrected.  The Treasurer’s report showed a bank balance of $10,051.17.  Expenses of $500 per state convention delegate will be paid to the delegates.  The Foundation balance is $203, and this amount  will be presented to the Foundation at the state convention.  The Book Project has a balance of $88.86; Karen Telck , project chairman, is collecting donations.

Sara Easley, 1st Vice Pres ., reported current local membership of 271 members.  She reminded us that the 2028-2019 membership drive begins March 1.  State TRTA dues are $35 and local unit dues are $10.

Rick Chandler, District 18 Pres.,  gave a legislative report.  Priscilla Hyson, Scholarship Chair, reminded member of the $500 scholarship to be given to a student going into the field of education.  See the Bylaws for the scholarship rules.

There are a number of action items on the January agenda  for your consideration. The Executive Committee, with the leadership of Rick Chandler, revised the Bylaws to comply with the state TRTA Bylaws regarding election of officers. The changes read as follows:  

Article VII, Section 1. The president shall appoint a three (3) member Nominating Committee in October. One member to serve as Chair will be selected by the committee members. 

Section 2. A slate of names will be printed in the January Odessa RT/SPA Newsletter. 

Section 3. Election of officers shall be held at the January meeting. The Nominating Committee of three are Priscilla Hyson, Lauri Farber and Mary Alice Ramos. Priscilla Hyson served as the Chair. The slate of officers is as follows: President, Lauri Farber; First Vice-President, Sara Easley; Second Vice-President, Karen Telck; Treasurer, Marcus Ramage; and Secretary, Sande McAdams. 

Article XIV. Section 2. One (1) scholarship, not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500) per fiscal year, may be awarded when funds are available to a student in the field of education who is a relative of an Odessa RT/SPA member.

All volunteer hours for 2017 need to be turned in at this meeting.  Maye Armour will appreciate your turning in ALL  your hours.  You may have more hours  than you think!

President Mary Reeves called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m., welcoming members and guests.
Mary Alice Ramos gave the Invocation, and  the meal was served by Chef Scott Williams and his staff.
Elaine Davisson led the pledges to the American and Texas flags.  The Thought for the day was given  by Carol Horton.

Second Vice President Karen Telck introduced our guest speaker, Selina V. Mireles, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Education, with The University of Texas of the Permian Basin.  Dr. Mireles shared information on her responsibilities with student teachers, dual  credit students and student in the STEM program among other programs within the College of Education.

President Reeves recognized Odessa RT/SPA officers and committee chairs.
Secretary Marilyn Andjulis read the minutes from the November 13, 2017, meeting.  The minutes were approved as read.  Treasurer Marcus Ramage gave the Treasurer’s Report as of November 30, 2017, with a bank balance of $10,114.32.  The Foundation balance was  $203 and the Book Project balance was $88.86.

The Retirement Seminar will be at Bonham Middle School, February 3, 2018 with Lauri Farber as district chair.
Health Care Chair Elizabeth Barlow shared December Health Tips.  December 1-31 is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and December 3-9  is National Handwashing Awareness Week.

Birthday recognition for December was presented to Phyllis White; Volunteer hours, to Helen Kirk; steps, to Beverly McColloch and Attendance, to Judy Herron.  Drawing for a Christmas wreath was won by Betty Kay King.

CHANGES TO THE ORT/SPA  BYLAWS   (REVISED 2017)Article V, Section 3  Members who pay state dues by bank draft or out of their annuity must send local dues to the local treasurer.  The previous sections 3 and 4 are now sections 4 and 5.

and December meetings have changed from the normal pattern, so please write November 13 and
December 8 on your calendar right away. You will want to be here November 13 to participate in a
REALLY FUN drawing for a surprise gift ???!!!. Bring us a recruit!
You will also want to bring back your green reservation form for the December Christmas Luncheon
along with your $12 for the meal. The meal will be delicious! The deadline for December reservations is December 1, 2017. The speaker for the December 8 th Luncheon is UTPB President, Dr. Sandra K.

The organization Bylaws provide for our elections to be conducted in the manner shown below in Article VII .

At the October meeting a Nomination Committee was appointed. The slate of officers which they
nominate will be printed in the January Newsletter, and the election of officers for 2018-2020 will be
held at the January meeting.



Pres. Mary Reeves called the meeting to order at 1:30 pm welcoming new member Debbie Stewart. She introduced the officers. Thought of the Day was given by Esther Sofge, and the pledges were led by Kathy Chandler. Second Vice Pres. Karen Telck introduced speakers Tracy Austin and Jennifer Johnson of the American Red Cross.

Minutes of the previous minutes were approved as printed. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Rick
Chandler; the balance was $9,583.90 as of Sept. 30, 2017. Committee reports were given by Sara Easley reporting 268 current members; Karen Telk announcing the November program by a Rotary member; Carol Horton gave an update on member benefits; Elizabeth Barlow reminded members to get their immunizations updated; Mary Reeves gave a report on donations given to the Foundation for hurricane victims; Maye Armour encouraged all members to turn in their volunteer hours monthly; Rick Chandler gave a legislative report on the 2017 legislative session and the TRS-Care insurance bill; Betty Kay King and Mary Alice Ramos had no report.

The new business was the appointment of a three-member Nominating Committee to get a slate of
officers for 2018-2020. Priscilla Hyson announced the Odessa Forum meeting on Friday, Oct. 20.
Drawings were held for Volunteer Hours—Debbie Stewart, Exercise Steps—Ann Willis, Birthday for
October—Lauri Farber and Membership Attendance—Mary Alice Ramos.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:43 p.m. with 37 attending.

President Mary Reeves called the meeting to order at 1:30 pm.  She recognized new members  and guests.  The pledges to the flags of the United  States and Texas were led by Marilyn Andjulis.  The thought of the day was given by LaNell Agee.   Second Vice-President Karen Telck introduced Libby McCrone,  new AMBA representative for TRTA member benefits.  She discussed member benefits for our association members.  If one has questions she may be contacted at 432-335-0534 or at

Mary Reeves introduced Chris Cole from the Speakers’ Bureau representing the 4 Kids Future for the ECISD school bond election on November 7.  He shared information on the comprehensive school bond.

New Business:   Treasurer Marcus Ramage submitted the Treasurer’s Report as of August 31, with a balance of $9,332.38  Some TRTA state dues will be made from this balance.  The Book Project has a balance of $88.86. 

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed.   First Vice-President Sara Easley reported the membership number at 310 as of September 18.   Mary Reeves reported TRTA members of Texas have contributed $100,000 to the Foundation Fund to aid in Hurricane Harvey relief.

District 18 President Rick Chandler gave a legislative report regarding TRS Care effective January 1, 2018.  Members may go online to Tim Lee’s INSIDE LINE newsletter at  for updated information on benefit changes and also refer to your latest issue of THE VOICE magazine from TRTA.  Rick Chandler announced that the TRTA District 18 Fall Conference to be Friday, September 29 at Region 18 ESC.

Drawings for  Volunteer Hours, Health Care and Attendance were made.  Carol Horton with Kathy and Rick Chandler gave birthday cup cakes with candles to members in attendance who had June, July,  August and September birthdays.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 pm  with 50 members being in attendance.
