Today we are now four weeks away from the gavel sounding to open the 84th session of the Texas Legislature. The time for planning and preparing to meet the challenges of this session grows short. There will be two attachments sent with this e-mail.  They are meant to provide you with some basic information that should be helpful during the session.  I am attaching them so you may download them to your computer for future references.  The information in them may also be helpful in sharing with active and retired educators to help them gain a better insight into legislators and the Texas Legislature.  One attachment deals with basic information on the legislature and the other deals with how to better understand your legislator.
Background of the attachments--Vicki Truitt is a consultant for TRTA. She served three terms in the TX. House and chaired what is now called the Committee on Pensions.  All bills pertaining to retired teachers must pass through that committee.  At a meeting I attended this summer, she prepared and presented the information in the attachments.

Senate Senator Leticia Van de Puttee (#26), Rep. Mike Villarreal (#123) and Trey Martinez Fischer (#116) have chosen to seek different political positions.  Informing those that will now be running for their positions of TRTA issues and then making sure to work at turning out the vote will be the challenges of those living in their districts.

A special thanks to Carlos Ortiz, David Plylar and Barbara Palcewski for volunteering to put forth extra energy this session by being a contact person to those representing them in Austin this session.  During the course of the legislative session, it would be helpful to have a constituent contact in each of our legislative districts to let their legislator know how a bill will be helpful, or not helpful, to them.  If you would like to be a contact person, just let me know.

My apologies for many of you that will just now be receiving my e-mails.  I had a computer problem and believe I now have it fixed with the right names and e-mail addresses.

Information is like wading in a lake, you want enough water to be able to enjoy the experience, but not so much you have to worry about drowning.  I will try to send you enough information during the session so you will be informed, but not so much where you feel inundated with it.

Once again, I encourage you to read the attachments and take advantage of the great information Vicki has provided.
